In the year 2001, I had never used the Internet. I decided to try it. I went to a library and opened up Internet Explorer. I stared at it. I think I even went to the address line of the browser and typed the word “Internet” in hopes that I would receive some kind of comprehensible instructions. I was dumbfounded. What was all this stuff on the screen and what was I supposed to do with it? I left.
A few months later I was at a friend’s house and I asked him to show me how to use the Internet. He showed me how to do a search for a page, how to use the forward and back buttons, and all these things. I mean, I don’t remember everything he showed me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had to show me how to click on a link.
It wasn’t till the year 2003 that I got my first email account. I was living in Europe and my family was far away so phone calls were few and far between. My mother explained to me that I could open up an email account for free, and she told me how to do it. I thought – wow! I can communicate to my mom from far away for free!
Okay. So I was a bit behind the times. Sounds hard to believe, but there it is. I was very busy at that time in my life, doing other things.
In the year 2006 I began my study of Internet Marketing. By this point I had learned to surf the net, make purchases online, and I even had more than one email account. I bought Honest Riches by Holly Mann and began to study and practice Internet Marketing. (I came across her eBook by mistake when I was doing some research on economics.)
I was still relatively clueless. I didn’t fully understand what a website was. I didn’t know what a URL or a domain name was. When I tried to make my first website I would email my sister (a website designer) with questions like “do I embed the links in Photoshop?”
Okay. Not everyone is starting out as clueless as I was. But I think that many beginning (and even not-so beginning) Internet Marketers might be missing a full understanding of the basics and the key terms associated with the Internet and Marketing in general.
I have created this website a while ago (the one you are looking at right now) but did not have time to work on it and left it with 2 pages for over half a year. However I intend to add information which will assist others to understand the basics connected with the residual streams of income which can be generated though Internet Marketing or other methods of making money online while working from home.
Throughout my posts you might find me giving definitions of “obvious” terms. Well, this is why. And as time allows, maybe I will even begin an Internet Marketing Glossary.
There may be others out there who have similar questions to the ones I did, but are too embarrassed to ask. Well, understanding the simple basics can be integral to your success. And it might even make the difference in the end as to whether you achieve your goals or not. So don’t neglect it, and don’t be afraid to ask.
