Thank you for your input Dave – you make a good point. Free non-premium themes can have dubious code and it makes a big difference in the long run. I think free themes make it easier for people to start out with Wordpress, but after a while it comes time to upgrade. I’m switching all of my blogs to Premium themes, though some are free and some aren’t.

There is also a good plugin which I’ve sometimes use to check free themes for invalid or malicious code, before using them. It can be found at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tac/

Theme Hybrid and WooThemes are both really great (I’ve used them both). There are tons of free WP themes available, and some of them are really great looking. However, you have to be a little careful with free themes — they may look great, but some of them have really flawed code. It’s best to read reviews from people have used them before trying them on your site. The nice thing about premium themes is that at least they offer support.

@Mark Yes, Theme Hybrid was a great surprise for me. There are also several other related themes. They have solved a lot for me and they are very very versatile. They also have more specialized page templates than any other theme I have come across – authors, tags, categories, archives, links, and even login/registration pages. Was a great find. The support forum is also very useful and educational.

Elegant Themes look very nice as well and give a nice diversity of design which I like.

Never heard of Theme Hybrid, but glad I do now. I’m seeing more of this model: low payment for unlimited number of high quality themes or support. I signed up with Elegant Themes earlier this year. The themes there are nice and have a lot of features.
